Seatbelt Maintenance

Seat belts save lives. Here are a few basic tips on seat belt cleaning and maintenance.

Seatbelts in its modern form have gone through a lot of initial development. In India, a provision to fit seatbelts became compulsory in 1991 and factory fitted seatbelts for the front seats became compulsory in 1995. Today, seatbelts are a compulsory fitment for all front-facing seats in any car sold in India. A seatbelt’s maintenance though is something we take for granted, as they are not known to go wrong. Here are some tips that will help you keep your car’s seatbelts in top shape.

Cleaning seatbelts

If by chance you do spill something on your seatbelts and it leaves a stain, use mild soap and warm water when cleaning spills from the seatbelts. Do not use a strong detergent, bleach or dye, since these caustic fluids may weaken the belt's material and affect the seatbelts basic integrity. A dirty seatbelt apart from being weaker due to gradual disintegration of the seatbelt material also looks dirty especially if the seatbelt is a shade of beige or brown.

Keep the buckle areas clear

If by chance you do spill something on your seatbelts and it leaves a stain, use mild soap and warm water when cleaning spills from the seatbelts. Do not use a strong detergent, bleach or dye, since these caustic fluids may weaken the belt's material and affect the seatbelts basic integrity. A dirty seatbelt apart from being weaker due to gradual disintegration of the seatbelt material also looks dirty especially if the seatbelt is a shade of beige or brown.

Replace your seatbelt if damaged or worn

Seatbelts are not something you would want to take a chance with. If you find the stitching on the seatbelt to be coming off or the seatbelt itself facing wear issues, it is best to replace them as soon as possible. By design, seatbelts cannot be repaired. If they are damaged, especially if bits that hold integral parts like the loops that hold the buckle (which also act as a force limiter) are showing signs of stretching, it is best to change them as soon as possible. Remember to get them replaced only by an authorised car service centre as the bolt used to fasten a seatbelt assembly to the body of your car and the torque to be applied on that bolt are very specific and are best left to professionals.
Although it is advisable to use only company provided seatbelts, aftermarket race seatbelts and harnesses can also be used for specialty applications. It is essential that the mounting points for these belts are on a separate bolt on the body structure or on a roll cage type structure.

Multiply Fuel Savings with Vehicle Maintenance

As fuel prices continue to drop and rise, motorists should take advantage of their savings at the pump and invest it back into their vehicles. By spending a little now to increase fuel efficiency, drivers can multiply fuel savings and save more money at the pump.

Petrol or Diesel prices can increase or decrease and that means motorists can count on significant savings at the pump. A small investment in simple and inexpensive auto care will add up to better fuel economy and even more savings.
We encourage motorists to be car care aware and perform simple steps to improve fuel efficiency and save money.
Engine Performance: Keep your car properly tuned to improve fuel mileage by an average of 4 percent.
Tire Pressure: Keep tires properly inflated and improve fuel mileage by up to 3.3 percent.
Motor Oil: Improve fuel mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer.
Air Filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles.
Fuel Cap: Damaged, loose or missing fuel caps allow fuel to vaporize into the air.
Fix It: Addressing a serious maintenance problem, like a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent.
In addition to vehicle maintenance, modifying driving habits, such as observing the speed limit and avoiding quick stops and starts, can also increase fuel efficiency. Consolidating trips, avoiding excessive idling and removing unnecessary items from the trunk are also easy ways to lower fuel consumption.

Hyundai to showcase i20 N Sport at Auto Expo 2016: Report

India is one of the major markets for South Korean car-maker Hyundai. Its Indian subsidiary Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is the second-largest car-manufacturer in the country.

India being an important market for Hyundai, the car-maker is reportedly planning to launch its performance car division in the country. To check its feasibility, the company is expected to unveil i20 N Sport, the sport version of the Elite i20 hatchback at Auto Expo 2016 reports Oncars.
Globally unveiled in August 2015, the i20 N Sport is the product of Hyundai's N Division, a new high-performance sub-division dedicated to develop sporty versions of Hyundai's regular cars. The main change lies under the hood. The 1.4-litre petrol engine sold in 98.6bhp and 133Nm tune overseas has been re-tuned to deliver 114bhp and 160Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via six-speed manual transmission.
To make the i20 N Sport different from the regular model, Hyundai has given the car new 17-inch alloy wheels and side skirts. The front and rear bumpers have been tweaked with more muscular design complementing the side skirts. The car sports a rear boot spoiler and a stainless steel free-flow CAT back exhaust system with a large exhaust tip. The N-badges can be seen over the front fender and at the rear hatchback door.
Additionally, the i20 N Sport will feature a stiffer spring setup and the brakes have been updated with a set of ventilated discs up front and solid discs in the rear. The car will also come with four-channel ABS and an EBD system for safety.
In addition to the i20 N Sport, Hyundai is also expected to showcase the Tucson SUV and a compact SUV that will be positioned below the Creta at Auto Expo 2016.

Hyundai to showcase Tucson, Sonata hybrid, N Vision 2025, Genesis G90 at Auto Expo 2016

The year 2015 saw Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) take the SUV segment by storm with its Creta. The Creta recorded over 90,000 bookings worldwide at the end of December 2015 and became Indian Car Of The Year (ICOTY) 2016.

Buoyed by the response, the company has decided to focus on strengthening its SUV line-up in 2016. Hyundai will showcase its Tucson SUV at the upcoming Auto Expo 2016 and the launch can be expected in the second half of the year. Apart from the Tucson, Hyundai will showcase the Sonata hybrid, N Vision 2025, and introduce Genesis luxury brand at the Auto Expo 2016 in February, reports ET Auto.
Tucson will be positioned between Creta and Santa Fe in Hyundai's India SUV portfolio, carrying an estimated price tag in the range of Rs 17 and 22 lakh. The SUV is built on a new platform that offers larger cabin space and provides 513 litres of luggage capacity. The India-spec model is expected in diesel engines that is available in three options: 113bhp (1.7-litre), 134bhp (2.0-litre) and 183bhp (2.0-litre).

The Vision N 2025 is a design study that underlines the capabilities of Hyundai's global design team.
The first car from the Genesis luxury brand, G90, will have its India premiere at the show. Though the brand is not expected in India in its first phase of expansion, G90 is an attempt from Hyundai to shed the image of value-for-money car maker. The flagship sedan will boast of many new luxury and tech features. Hyundai will also unveil 1.0 and 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engines that can be seen in the future vehicles of the brand at the show.

Hyundai India Registers Sales Growth of 8% in December | Hyundai Car Latest News

Hyundai India Registers Sales Growth of 8% in December | Hyundai Car Latest News

Hyundai India Registers Sales Growth of 8% in December

Hyundai India has registered a growth of 7.98% in sales for the month of December. The South Korean car maker had sold 59,391 units in December 2014 and this time, the sales figure rose to 64,135 units. While the overall growth in this month was impressive, growth in the domestic market was, even more, spectacular as the automaker was able to sell 41,861 units last month as compared to 32,504 units in December 2014. This increase in number accounted for 28.78% growth.
The response in the international market was, however, not so encouraging as the car maker observed a decline in sales for December. The number of units exported was reduced to 22,274 units from 26,887 in December last year. The decrease can be partially attributed to the fact that the magnificent response invoked by the Creta in the Indian market and domestic growth with 28.78% led the company to focus more on domestic market which help in a growth.
Speaking on the occasion, Hyundai India’s senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), Rakesh Srivastava, said that the surge in December was driven by “strong performance of Grand i10, Elite i20 and Creta.”
The hike in sales comes at a time when Hyundai recently reported record bookings for the year 2015. The South Korean automaker sold 4.76 lac units outdoing the annual target of 4.65 lac units. The announcement in early December by the car maker that the prices of its model will be hiked from January also increased the figures as those who did not want to spend extra cash bought cars in 2015. It seems like the automaker will be happy with the encouraging response with 28.78% in the domestic market, more at a time when the global response has not been so motivating.

Break Oil: When to replace it?

Brake oil is used by hydraulic braking systems of automobiles. Read to know the characteristics of brake oil and when to replace it.

Automobile braking systems work on hydraulics and a lubricating fluid called brake oil is necessary for them to function. Brake oil over the years has evolved greatly to ensure better operation and reliability of the system. The different types of brake oils according to their application include grades like DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5 and DOT 5.1. These types of brake oil listed correspond to their boiling points as they work in very high temperature and pressure environments. DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake oils are most commonly used in both India and internationally.
The boiling point of brake oil needs to be high to avoid vapourisation, as vapour is compressible and will hamper the effectiveness of a hydraulic system. Vapour in the hydraulic system will also result in pressure differences which in the case of brake oil can cause problems like juddering. This can also cause uneven pressure differences in the brake system and can lead in rupturing of the brake lines. Over time, due to moisture content in the atmosphere brake oil absorbs moisture. The boiling point of brake oil after absorbing moisture is known as its wet boiling point.
DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are able to absorb water to an extent (hygroscopic) under normal humidity levels. DOT 5 is silicon based and cannot absorb water (non-hygroscopic). DOT 5 brake oil is not compatible with anti-lock braking systems. Silicone brake oil, which contains additives that prevent the oil from becoming sludgy under low temperatures, is used in very cold climates.
Most modern cars, if not all, come with brake fluid reservoirs that allow one to see through so you can check on the level of brake fluid without physically opening the cap. Usually, the reservoir is located on the engine firewall or towards the back of the engine bay towards the driver’s side. The reservoir is also higher up in the engine bay so that it is easily accessible. Once you locate the reservoir, it is easy to identify certain markings on it to know if you need to fill more brake fluid or if it is at an acceptable level. As the container is in the engine bay and is often exposed to elements like grime, heat and oil, one might need to clean off a little grime on it to ensure correct levels.
Brake oil must be changed every two years as the oil gets saturated with moisture. The moisture content can also corrode seals and metal inside the braking system. Old brake oil is flushed out completely and replaced with new oil. Always remember to bleed the brake system of all air bubbles before using the car. Forgetting to bleed the brake system can lead to catastrophic brake failure and can result in an accident.
Ensure an adequate level of brake oil is refilled according to the marking on the container located in the engine bay. If the level drops, top up with the grade of brake oil recommended by the car manufacturer. Also visit to the authorized workshop for checking & functioning of brake system as there may be chances of leakage in the hydraulic system. Always remember to thoroughly clean the rim of the container and the cap before putting it back on to ensure no stray particles enter the reservoir. Do not use brake oil from an opened bottle as it will have absorbed moisture from the atmosphere. Wash off any brake oil residue that might have spilled in the engine bay while refilling as it can corrode the paint.
